Hale County Release Meanings
A Hale County release is an event tied to one booking or prison term. At the Hale County Jail, the event may be a bond release, time served, dismissal, probation order, court-ordered release, or transfer. At Formby Unit or J.B. Wheeler Unit, it is a TDCJ event. Plainview Police records may show an arrest and initial processing, but the sheriff and court usually hold the later custody trail. The key fact is the destination. A person can leave one building and remain confined in another system.
“Released” should therefore be read with care. Bond means the person left pretrial detention while the case continued. Time served means the custodial part of a judgment was met. Probation, also called community supervision, is a court sentence served in the community. Parole or mandatory supervision follows a state-prison term while the sentence remains active. Transfer means custody changed hands. A deceased or escaped status ends a facility's custody in a different way and must never be described as an ordinary release.
- Discharge
- The formal end of confinement or, in some records, the end of a sentence or supervision.
- Detainer
- A request or legal hold that can keep a person confined or cause transfer to another agency.
- Time served
- A finding that the required jail portion has been satisfied after applicable credit.
- Expunction
- A court-ordered remedy governed by Texas law, not an automatic result of release or dismissal.
Hale County Release Routes
The release code and receiving agency keep unlike outcomes from being confused. A court order may authorize release, yet the jail record supplies the actual door time. A closed local booking may also lead straight to TDCJ, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody. Read both sources.
| Outcome | What it means | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or personal bond | Pretrial custody ended subject to the case and bond terms. | Court docket and jail release event |
| Time served | The jail calculated the custodial term as complete. | Judgment, jail credit, and release time |
| Dismissal or court order | A court changed or removed the local basis for custody. | Signed order plus jail timestamp |
| Probation | The court ordered community supervision. | Hale County CSCD and case docket |
| Parole or mandatory supervision | A state prisoner left confinement under TDCJ supervision. | TDCJ status, Board action, and parole office |
| Transfer or detainer | Another agency received the person. | Destination field and receiving-agency record |
Hale County Release Record Fields
The strongest local proof is the booking and release record held by the Hale County Sheriff's Office. It identifies the event, separates people with similar names, and connects the jail action to a case. Charges describe allegations at booking, not a conviction. A complete record should be read beside the final court disposition.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Full name, alias, identifier | Who the record concerns; use date of birth or another lawful identifier to avoid a name-only match. |
| Booking number and time | The specific jail stay and when it began. |
| Arresting agency and cause number | Which agency and court file connect to the booking. |
| Charge and bond | The booking allegation and any recorded bond terms. |
| Release date and time | When the Hale jail recorded the booking as ended. |
| Release reason or authority | Bond, sentence completion, court action, transfer, or another coded basis. |
| Destination or receiving agency | Whether the person entered the community or remained in custody elsewhere. |
| Photo and property notation | The image tied to intake and any releasable property record. |
Request Hale County Release Records
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 provides the formal route to existing sheriff records. Start with the official Hale County Sheriff and Jail page. The Sheriff's Office is at 1900 South Columbia Street, Plainview, Texas 79072, and its administrative number is (806) 296-2724. The jail line is (806) 293-5377. Call to identify the current public-information officer and accepted written method if no request email or portal is posted.
- Gather the full name, approximate booking date, and booking or cause number. Add date of birth only when needed to distinguish the record.
- Label the writing as a Public Information Act request. Ask for the booking sheet, exact release date and time, release reason or authority, destination, and booking photograph.
- Request the existing electronic format. For a time range, give exact Central Time start and end timestamps and list each desired field.
- Keep proof of delivery. If charges may exceed a limit acceptable to you, ask for an itemized estimate before work proceeds.
- Compare the response with the court order or receiving-agency record. Request clarification of codes, not a new legal analysis.
The Act does not require the county to create a new report or answer questions. If a release-event export does not exist, ask which existing release log, booking-out sheet, or transfer order holds the fields. When an agency seeks an Attorney General ruling, Government Code §552.301 includes ten- and fifteen-business-day procedural duties; ten business days is not a guaranteed production date. Under §552.2615, an estimate is required when expected charges exceed $40.
Hale County Record Retention
Online display and legal retention are different. The Texas Local Schedule PS makes the county jail register permanent under series PS4200-06a. That register includes at least the prisoner's name, gender, intake number, reason for confinement, and release or transfer date. Series PS4200-10 keeps booking-in and booking-out records, court release orders, and transfer papers for at least two years after release or transfer. These are retention floors, not promises that every detail is open to every requester.
Government Code Chapter 552 permits access subject to specific exceptions and other confidentiality law. Active investigative material, protected identifiers, medical facts, victim information, juvenile matters, security details, and sealed or expunged records may require different treatment. Current expunction procedure is in Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A. Nondisclosure is a separate remedy under Government Code Chapter 411. Neither release nor dismissal alone proves that either order exists.
Property After Hale County Release
A release can leave a useful property trail. Local Schedule PS series PS4200-12 keeps prisoner property inventories and receipts for at least two years after release or transfer. A former Hale County Jail detainee can identify the booking and ask the sheriff for the releasable inventory or receipt that documents return of nonconfiscated property. Identity checks and disclosure limits still apply.
State-prison identification follows another rule. Government Code §501.0165 directs TDCJ to determine before parole, mandatory supervision, or discharge whether a prisoner has a valid driver license or identification card and, when needed, request a DPS personal identification card. This TDCJ process applies to state prisoners leaving Formby or Wheeler. It does not describe an ordinary bond release from the Hale County Jail.
Hale Release and Court Records
Hale release verification often needs two records. The sheriff's record gives the physical event; the district, county, justice, or municipal case gives its legal cause. For a felony, consult the district clerk and the 64th Judicial District Court or the relevant district court. For county-level matters, use the proper county clerk path. A bond order, dismissal, judgment, commitment, or probation order should be read alongside the jail timestamp.
The Hale County public-access portal and re:SearchTX are online starting points, though coverage and document access vary. Judicial records do not use the same Public Information Act route as sheriff records. The District Clerk at 225 Broadway, Suite 4, Plainview, can route felony court records at (806) 291-5226, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a noon to 1 p.m. closure.
The official 64th District Court site shows the local court source used to interpret a Hale County release:

Find Hale County Released Inmates
Begin with identity and custody class. Use the full legal name, an approximate birth date, a booking or cause number, the arresting agency, and an approximate date. Never select a record only because a name matches. The facility-first sequence prevents the most common error: treating a move between custody systems as freedom.
- Check an official current-custody source only to learn whether the person remains listed at its update time. Hale County has no verified official rolling release feed.
- Ask the Hale County Jail for the booking's release time, reason, authority, and destination. Obtain the written record when durable proof matters.
- Read the court chronology for bond, dismissal, judgment, sentence, commitment, probation, revocation, or discharge.
- Check TDCJ when state custody is plausible. A current unit is not a community release; an absent result is not proof of discharge.
- Check the correct supervision office. Hale County CSCD handles adult probation, while TDCJ Parole Division handles state parole and mandatory supervision.
- Use Texas IVSS-Counties for a specific-person alert, then verify the alert with the agency. People no longer in custody may disappear from its search.
- Branch to BOP, PACER, or ICE only when federal or immigration facts support that path.
- Submit a narrow written records request when no online view answers the question.
Why did the person vanish from the roster? A current roster is a snapshot, not a release archive. Removal may follow bond, transfer, data correction, an agency move, or restricted access. Use the 24-Hour Release List workflow for a precisely defined recent period, and use Projected Release Date only for a future calculation rather than proof of an event.
TDCJ Hale Release Search
The TDCJ offender search covers people currently incarcerated in TDCJ. It is updated on working days and warns that information is at least 24 hours old. Search by exact seven-digit TDCJ number or SID when known. Otherwise use exact last name and at least a first initial, then compare age and case details. A blank result may mean discharge, a mismatch, or no TDCJ history.
| Search or result field | Use |
|---|---|
| TDCJ number or SID | Best keys for a precise state record. |
| Name, gender, race | Broader search and identity refinements. |
| Current Facility | Current state placement, not the Hale County Jail. |
| Projected Release Date | A changeable calculation, not a completed release. |
| Maximum Sentence Date | The sentence endpoint in TDCJ's calculation. |
| Parole Eligibility Date | When review may be possible, not a promise of release. |
For historical incarceration and release data, use the official TDCJ information route. The email information instructions accept a full name and TDCJ number at pia@tdcj.texas.gov; when the number is unknown, include exact date of birth or approximate age and county of conviction. The listed information is provided without charge. Save the date of any live result because values can change.
The official TDCJ search form illustrates the identifiers used for a Hale County state-prison inquiry:

Hale County Recent Releases
The official Sheriff and Jail page provides contact information but no verified inmate roster, 24-hour release list, 72-hour release list, or mobile app. Commercial “recent booking” results document arrest intake, not release. Do not convert those pages into a Hale release feed.
For one booking, call the jail and ask whether the event ended in community release or transfer. For a list, request existing jail-management release rows for an exact start and end time. Ask for name, booking number, booking and release timestamps, reason, releasing facility, destination, arresting agency, cause number, charges, and any linked photo. If the system organizes reports by calendar day instead of rolling hours, accept that existing format and state the distinction.
Which Plainview Release System?
Plainview concentrates several systems near one city name. Hale County Jail is a county facility. Formby and Wheeler are separate TDCJ prisons, even though both sit five miles east of Plainview on the same acreage. Plainview Police handles municipal arrest and report records. The Plainview District Parole Office supervises some people after a state release. “Released in Plainview” is too vague to choose a record source.
Ask which agency booked the person and which facility last held them. A move from Formby to Wheeler, or from either prison to another state unit, is not release. Likewise, a Plainview police arrest may lead to a Hale County Jail booking, so the city report and county release record answer different parts of the event.
Two Plainview State Release Records
Formby Unit and J.B. Wheeler Unit are co-located five miles east of Plainview, yet TDCJ treats them as distinct prisons. Formby carries unit code FB and Wheeler carries unit code WR. Each has its own address, capacity, and official directory page. A search should use the exact unit name and code shown in the state record rather than the shared Plainview location.
A departure from either unit can be an inter-unit transfer. It does not by itself establish discharge, parole, or mandatory supervision. Record the current or last unit, TDCJ number or SID, status, and the date checked. For a past event, request TDCJ incarceration and release history. If supervision followed, verify it through the parole system and Plainview District Parole Office.
Hale County Release Supervision
Probation and parole are separate. Hale County CSCD, 519 Broadway in Plainview, supervises adults placed on community supervision by a court. The Plainview District Parole Office at 1001 North Interstate Highway 27, Suite 232, supervises parole and mandatory-supervision clients across Hale and nearby counties. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles makes release and revocation decisions; TDCJ Parole Division supervises after release.
Start with the case docket for probation. For parole, use TDCJ status and the Plainview DPO directory, then consult Parole & Probation. Formby and Wheeler both list reentry planning among official programs, and Formby lists CHANGES/Pre-Release. A program listing does not prove that a named person attended, completed it, or was released.
Hale Release Alerts and Transfers
Texas replaced legacy county VINE service with Texas IVSS-Counties on September 1, 2025. Search one person by full or partial name, DOC ID, SID, jail ID, or permanent booking number. The portal covers current custody or supervision and warns that someone no longer in custody may not appear. Alerts are useful prompts, not official release records.
Federal and immigration cases require different tools. The BOP Inmate Locator covers sentenced federal prisoners and can show a release date. PACER supplies the federal docket. The ICE detainee locator covers current ICE custody and some recently released people within its stated window. An ICE detainer may turn a local jail “release” into transfer. Always request the receiving agency.
Hale Release Source Comparison
Choose a source for the custody system and the time period. No single Hale search spans every local, state, and federal event.
| Source | Best question | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hale sheriff record | When and why did a county booking end? | Must be requested; transfer may not mean freedom. |
| Court record | What legal order or outcome explains custody? | Usually does not show the door timestamp. |
| TDCJ search or history | Is the person in state prison, or what state event occurred? | Live search omits fully discharged people. |
| IVSS-Counties | Can an alert be set for a named person? | Not an official historical archive. |
| BOP or ICE | Was federal or immigration custody involved? | Neither is a Hale County release list. |
Hale County Release Facilities
Each facility link opens the record path that fits its operator. The county jail uses sheriff and court records. The state prisons use TDCJ records. Plainview Police supplies arrest reports while the county jail and court establish later custody and release.
- Hale County Jail: confirm the local release code, time, authority, and destination.
- Formby Unit (FB): use TDCJ status and history; a unit move is not discharge.
- J.B. Wheeler Unit (WR): verify through TDCJ and the parole system when supervision follows.
- Plainview Police Department detention/booking function: obtain the arrest report, then follow the jail and court trail.
